For years, Harvey Weinstein’s New York City sex crimes conviction signified a landmark legal victory for the #MeToo movement. But the victory that solidified a global reckoning against alleged sexual predators was thrown out the window on Thursday morning, when the state’s highest court overturned the disgraced producer’s conviction.
And legal experts say that while the bombshell decision is a significant victory for Weinstein—and paves the way for a new trial—it does not mean he will soon see the outside of a jail cell.
“Weinstein will get a new trial, but that doesn’t mean he’s actually innocent,” former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told The Daily Beast on Thursday.
