Erre a hipotézisre a Plútó mozgásában tapasztalható rendellenességek inspirálták a kutatókat, akik úgy vélik, hogy ezt a kimutatható gravitációs perturbációt egy, a Plútótól jóval távolabb keringő, de nagytömegű ismeretlen bolygó okozhatja.
