Sanctions Be Damned, Putin’s War Machine Is Still Powered by U.S. Parts
Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/GettyOver two years into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Putin’s aircraft still use U.S., Japanese, and European components. A forthcoming report from the Independent Anti-Corruption Commission, a Ukrainian think tank known as NAKO, found shocking evidence that components from hundreds of foreign companies are present in Russian military planes. Of those foreign made components, over 60 percent came from American manufacturers such as Texas Instruments and Intel. The products themselves, such as circuit boards and semiconductors, sound mundane but are deeply important to aircraft manufacturing. Many are listed as “highest priority” by the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security due to a “heightened risk of being diverted illegally to Russia because of their importance to Russia’s war efforts.”Even amid sanctions and export controls, NAKO’s report found that Russia has increased its imports of western made electronic components since 2021, in some cases by more than 500 percent. In 2023 alone, they found that Russia imported over $4 Billion in components connected to aircraft manufacturing. These components make it possible for the Russian air force to maintain its role in Ukraine. NAKO has published numerous authoritative reports on components in Russian weapons. The problem extends beyond Russia’s planes. Western components are found in Russian weapons such as drones and missiles, but Russia’s ability to maintain its aircraft and build new ones is a key part of its war effort. Russia enjoys a large advantage in airpower over Ukraine, which makes it hard for Kyiv to hold ground and even harder to reclaim it. Russia relies heavily on “glide bombs” launched from aircraft to pound Ukrainian positions.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Who Was RFK Jr.’s Brain Worm? All the Possibilities, Ranked
Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/Reuters/Everett CollectionThis week:Possible RFK Brain Worms, RankedI, like most of America, have not stopped thinking about the story that doctors found a dead worm in Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s brain. It’s a “well, that certainly explains things” anecdote in an era of entirely inexplicable nonsense. This bozo literally had “brain worms,” the catch-all phrase we use for someone whose asinine ideas suggest they are absolutely losing their mind.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Jaw-Dropping Aurora Borealis Illuminate the Northern Sky Amid Solar Storm
Owen Humphreys/PA Images via Getty ImagesAs night descended across the Earth on Friday, a solar storm suffused the skies with a gorgeous display of aurora borealis, and well, it was jaw-dropping.For the first time in 20 years, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a watch for a “very rare” severe geomagnetic storm, which was upgraded to an extreme G5 storm later on Friday. This is the first G5 storm since 2003, and could effect the power grid, as well as radio communications. Aurora borealis caused by the storm were expected to be visible from Europe, Canada, and several northern U.S. states. On Friday night, they began to appear.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Nepo Baby of the Week: Hailey Bieber’s Pregnancy Is PR Gold for Justin
The Daily Beast/ReutersHailey and Justin Bieber’s baby might not have left the womb yet, but it’s already learning the ropes of influencer marketing. True to form, the Biebers’ baby announcement doubled as a promotional exercise; Justin teased a soft, folksy new song about how he’s “starting to be open” over a video of himself kissing a baby bump-bearing Hailey. You know what they say: It’s never to early to learn the family business, and so far, Baby Bieber is getting a master class in self-publicizing.Fans have suspected that Hailey Bieber might be pregnant since, well, long before she probably actually got pregnant. Now that the big moment is finally here, everyone who’s been waiting on Baby Bieber—heir/heiress to Hailey’s Rhode skincare fortune, as well as the songwriting legacy that gave us such soul-rending beats as “Yummy”—will surely be pleased to see the fanfare that’s accompanied this unborn infant’s unveiling. Both parents-to-be posted the same video to their Instagram grids, showing themselves kissing in a grassy field (in front of what looks like some kind of officiant?) while Hailey gently stroked her bump. The mother-to-be wore a lacy white dress, sunglasses, and a veil, while her man sported... a furry black jacket and a fitted baseball cap. In other words, the vibes are incongruous as hell, as always. From the generic guitar-strumming in the beginning, one might mistakenly think that the Biebers chose to accompany their announcement video with royalty-free stock audio. But then, a familiar voice starts crooning, “I’m starting to be open.” Could this new personal chapter in Justin Bieber’s life also launch a new sound? I guess we’ll just have to wait for that new album he’s been teasing for a while.Read more at The Daily Beast.
