FBI Informant Behind U.S. Drone Strike Says He’s Living a Nightmare
Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/Getty ImagesAn FBI informant who leaked sensitive government secrets that reportedly then led to a deadly U.S. drone strike claims Iran’s fearsome security apparatus has targeted him for assassination over the perceived betrayal, forcing him underground, in an undisclosed location, following a botched kidnapping attempt. In a heavily anonymized federal lawsuit obtained by The Daily Beast, “John Doe” says Iranian agents torched his car, broke into his home, and threatened his relatives after learning he was working with the American government. He now lives “in constant fear” of being killed by Iranian agents who have carried out dozens of hits and hundreds of abductions in various countries “with impunity,” according to his complaint.Because Doe is a marked man, he went into exile in a nearby nation where he “must now avoid any public interaction, in order to remain safe,” the complaint states.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Opinion: Diddy Saga Proves Time Was Never Up for Celebrity Abusers
Photo Illustration by Thomas Levinson/The Daily Beast/GettyWe have reached the stage of #MeToo ennui.Recently released video evidence of Sean “Diddy” Combs brutally assaulting his then-partner Cassie Ventura in a hotel hallway has led some former allies to condemn him, and his music has been removed from Peloton’s workout platform. But he’s still got the honorary degrees and keys to cities he’s been awarded—although there’s been talk of revoking some of them, it hasn’t happened yet.By contrast, new allegations published in The Guardian against David Copperfield over alleged sexual misconduct and his affiliation with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have been met with little outrage.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Bidenworld Candidate Says She’s a Renter, But She Owns a $1.2M House
Bloomberg/GettyMaggie Goodlander, a former senior adviser in the Biden White House and newly declared Democratic House candidate in New Hampshire’s 2nd District, proudly proclaimed upon launching her bid that she’s a renter “and there should be more renters in Congress.”It’s a fair point. As of 2020, half the members across both chambers were millionaires, and Congress is far more likely to have homeowners among its ranks than the general U.S. population. But Goodlander—who is also White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s wife—is herself a homeowner, a Daily Beast review of property records found. The couple own a home worth more than $1.2 million in a historic and pricey seaside neighborhood in Portsmouth, which sits in the state’s other district.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Garfield: A Fat, Lazy Cat Who Is the Epitome of America
Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/Shutterstock/Paramount GlobalFor decades now, French beaches have weathered a strange kind of plague. Since the 1980s, shards of orange plastic phones have been washing ashore—relics of an old novelty phone forged in the shape of Garfield, the most beloved cat in the U.S. Just five years ago, the lost shipping container that had set these creatures loose was found in a cave. Unfortunately, it was already empty—meaning, as far as this ongoing environmental issue was concerned, the cat was already out of the bag.As absurd as the image of French beachgoers stumbling on an endless tide of Garfield phones might be, it also feels deeply symbolic. Love him or hate him, Garfield is inescapable. As far as comics go, he’s America’s biggest export: Guinness World Records has Garfield on record as the most-syndicated comic across the globe. Put his face on anything, and it’ll fly off the shelves. Just ask his creator, Jim Davis, who actually stopped selling those suction-cup Garfield plushies for five years following their initial debut because after just two years, they’d sold so well (to the tune of 225 million plush cats) that he feared overexposure. America’s national bird might be a bald eagle, but if we could elect a mascot, this fat cat would win by default. As longtime fans know, this week’s new Garfield movie is just the tip of the furry iceberg when it comes to this cat’s cultural empire. There’s the original syndicated comic, the book compilations, 12 (twelve!!!) TV specials that helped save primetime cartoons, the unforgettable TV series Garfield and Friends (which taught a certain subset of millennials, including yours truly, about the joys of sarcasm), Garfield’s Pet Force (both the 2009 movie and the early-reader Scholastic novel series), and, of course, the live-action 2000s movies starring Bill Murray. No matter what your preferred medium might be, this orange tabby has probably already infiltrated it.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Shane Gillis’ Bros-Will-Be-Bros, Anti-Woke Sitcom Is Infuriatingly Bad
NetflixFrom a distance, Tires looks like a sitcom, maybe even enough to inspire some knee-jerk nostalgia for a time when comedies had a familiar shape, undistorted by atypical streaming models or low-laugh dramedies. The bona fides here are instantly recognizable. Episodes run around 22 minutes. The show stars Shane Gillis, popular stand-up comedian who parlayed being “canceled” and fired from Saturday Night Light into folk-hero mega-success. Here, he plays a character who shares his first name, like any number of ’90s-era vehicles. It’s set at a workplace, in this case an auto center, allowing the show to throw a handful of eccentric, underdog personalities together and bumble through some easy-to-digest situations. At the same time, Tires avoids the corny, predictable rhythms of a pure throwback: It’s a single-camera show with a little bit of handheld quasi-verisimilitude. It resembles a little of The Office, a little of Taxi, and a more blue-collar Home Improvement.Looking closer, however, reveals Tires as an even more contemporary phenomenon: the seemingly straightforward sitcom that’s pieced together from hazy, secondhand recollections of previous shows—a sitcom that’s like a pop quiz the creators arrogantly refused to study for. Marvel’s She-Hulk was one of these half-formed, rough-draft, written-from-memory shows; Tires is another, made for anyone who hated She-Hulk for its wokeness. It’s a bros-will-be-bros hangout session where comedians can cosplay as working class, valorizing their hackiest and most bullying instincts as regular-guy joshing.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Jimmy Kimmel Rips MTG for ‘Dangerous’ Assassination Claims
ABCOn Tuesday, Republican Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene falsely claimed that President Joe Biden tried to have former president Donald Trump killed in 2022, during an FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago to uncover stolen classified documents.“The Biden DOJ and FBI were planning to assassinate Pres Trump and gave the green light,” she posted on X. “Does everyone get it yet???!!!! What are Republicans going to do about it?”Trump himself was quick to parrot the claim, as were his allies at Fox News and Newsmax, despite the fact such authorization is standard protocol for the Department of Justice. Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel was disgusted by all of them, saying in his opening monologue on Wednesday, “This would actually be funny, if it wasn’t so stupid and dangerous.”Read more at The Daily Beast.
