Will Diddy Try to Use Met Gala to Rehab His Toxic Image?
Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/Getty ImagesOne year ago, Sean “Diddy” Combs attended the 2023 Met Gala dressed in an all-black ensemble by Sean John couture, representing both a comeback and a coup for the mogul’s eponymous fashion brand. Clad in a motorcycle jacket and black pants combo—topped off by a cape adorned with 1,000 satin and velvet petals—that he’d designed himself, Combs was riding high and enjoying his victory lap on the red carpet. “I had a chance to spend time with Karl when I was designing Sean John, just as a fellow designer,” Combs told Vogue that evening, nodding to the evening’s theme, which revolved around Karl Lagerfeld, the longtime creative director of Chanel. “[Lagerfeld] was so creative and he had such attention to detail (and) to beauty.” The quote oozes insider status. A lot can change in a year. Combs’ public image is now in tatters. The rapper and mogul is facing a number of serious sexual assault and trafficking allegations put forth in multiple lawsuits filed against him since last November. In March, federal agents raided two of his homes as part of a wider investigation. Read more at The Daily Beast.

Why Won’t the Royals Support Prince Harry’s Invictus Games?
Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/Getty imagesThe expected refusal of any members of the royal family to endorse Prince Harry’s Invictus Games charity by joining him at a church service commemorating its 10th anniversary next week is a “classic example of the royals cutting off their nose to spite their face,” a source has told The Daily Beast.Harry is arriving in London next week for a PR blitz focused around a thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Wednesday for his Paralympic-style event for wounded servicemen. It is the latest sign that Harry, whose team recently hired a U.K.-based spin doctor, is far from ready to give up on winning back the hearts and minds of his native land. The Palace declined to respond to requests for comment, but reports have made it clear that no working members of the royal family will attend the service. While there are hints he may see his father King Charles, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s camp ruled out even a quick meeting with Harry soon after Harry’s visit was announced. They will never forgive him for betraying family secrets in his memoir Spare, and don’t trust him to keep their meetings confidential, friends have told The Daily Beast.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Arizona’s Abortion Ban Repeal Is a Win and a Loss for Dems
Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily BeastOne irony of politics is that you are often punished for fixing a problem. The most famous example of this is Winston Churchill, who, after winning World War II, was promptly thrown out of office in 1945. No good deed goes unpunished; once you have solved our problems, we have no more use for you.Today’s Republican Party seems to understand this concept (look no further than Donald Trump sabotaging border security in order to keep the issue alive), and Democrats in Arizona, at least, apparently, do not.In case you missed it, the Arizona Senate voted on Wednesday to repeal the 1864 abortion ban that the Arizona Supreme Court reimposed last month. All 14 Democrats (with the help of two Republicans) voted for repeal, and Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs immediately signaled she would sign the bill.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Trump’s Latest Interview Is Also His Scariest to Date
Photo Illustration by Thomas Levinson/The Daily Beast/GettyListen to this full episode of The New Abnormal on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon and Stitcher.Donald Trump gave a lengthy interview this week for a cover story in Time magazine—and it sure scared The New Abnormal co-hosts Danielle Moodie and Andy Levy.In it, the twice-impeached 2024 hopeful lays out his plans to mobilize the military domestically to deport more than 11 million people, pardon every Jan. 6 rioter, allow states to monitor women’s pregnancies, withhold congressionally appropriated funding at his whims, and fire any attorney general that does not prosecute his chosen targets—among other things.Read more at The Daily Beast.

‘The Idea of You’ Creator Calls Harry Styles Comparisons ‘Reductive’
Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/Amazon MGM/Getty ImagesWelcome to modern rom-com week at The Daily Beast’s Obsessed! In honor of two big romance releases this week—The Fall Guy and The Idea of You—we’re celebrating everything we love about the last 15 years of romantic comedies. When Prime Video unveiled the first stills from its adaptation of The Idea of You, every One Direction fan came out of the woodwork to gossip about it. One could say they were up all night making conspiracy theories about the movie’s plot, as they claimed it was about all the midnight memories Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde shared. It’s no secret that Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel is partially inspired by Styles’ career with his (now broken-up) British boy band One Direction. Director Michael Showalter’s new movie, however, is a completely different case. Although the story follows a pop star in love with an older mother—and first-look images make stars Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway look eerily similar to Styles and Wilde during their two-year love affair—Lee says that, although fans have speculated the new movie is partially based on Wilde and Styles, there’s still no connection between that specific relationship and the story.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Crotchety Whining About ‘P.C. Crap’ Comedy Gets It All Wrong
Photo Illustration by Thomas Levinson/The Daily Beast/GettyAll week long, feathers have been ruffling, hives of bees were buzzing in bonnets, and a record numbers of bears were being poked, all while social media hosted unprecedented amounts of tizzies. “What’s the deal?” you might say in response to that, which would be apropos considering that the source of the online hubbub is the maven of that catchphrase himself, Jerry Seinfeld. The comedian spoke to The New Yorker’s David Remnick in an article published earlier this week. In the wide-ranging interview, he decried that there’s a scarcity of good comedy on TV to comfort people after a day of ingesting the troubling news of the world.I’m impressed with the lengths Seinfeld went to prove his point, going so far as to direct, co-write, and star in Unfrosted, a tediously bland “comedic” take on the origin of the Pop-Tart, enlisting dozens of his industry friends to propagate this new age of unfunny.Read more at The Daily Beast.

‘Sugar’ Destroyed Itself With One of the Worst Plot Twists Ever
Apple TV+(Warning: Spoilers for Sugar ahead.)Over the course of its first five episodes, Sugar has detailed dapper movie-obsessed Los Angeles private eye John Sugar’s (Colin Farrell) investigation into the baffling disappearance of Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler), the daughter of powerful movie producer Bernie (Dennis Boutsikaris), half-sister of scumbag former child actor David (Nate Corddry), and granddaughter of Hollywood titan Jonathan (James Cromwell). Nonetheless, Olivia’s whereabouts have only been one of the mysteries at the heart of Mark Protosevich’s Apple TV+ series, since, in various small but telling ways, it’s also teased a bigger secret lurking beneath its authentic—and self-referential—noir surface. As suggested by its numerous subtle hints, that surprise has to do with Sugar and his professional and personal acquaintances, all of whom are members of a vague close-knit organization. And at the end of its sixth episode, the show finally gave up the goods, revealing the real paradigm-altering nature of its protagonist.John Sugar is an alien. Like, from outer space. And, in particular, from a distant planet whose inhabitants resemble blue-skinned cast-offs from Avatar.Read more at The Daily Beast.
